Best Software of 2008

I’ll admit that I am a sucker for trying out just about every new piece of Freeware Software that hits the PC MAG (and other sources) circuit. I can’t tell you how many varieties of “Sticky Note” programs I’ve installed and uninstalled.
My addiction to Free Software leans towards what is productive and organizational. I have a PIM (Personal Information Manager). I use the Palm Desktop, however, they haven’t updated this software in many years. I guess you could argue that it is finished so why develop it any further.
I’ve used the “Notes” and “Calendar” features in both Outlook and Outlook Express but those programs are memory hogs and seemed to hang up a lot on my machine. I’ve switched to Thunderbird, for my e-mail, but I don’t use any of Thunderbird’s plug-ins or other features.
I frequently come across little snippets of stuff that I want to save. I may only need to save these for a short time but I need to save them none-the-less. I also have info that I want saved for an expanded length of time, like passwords and serial numbers. If I save these on my machine I run the risk of losing them if I don’t make a backup and backups need to be made frequently and on external flash drives or disks so you don’t lose the backup with the original in the event of a system crash.
So, along comes Evernote. I’ve been an Evernote user since the very first, .001, beta release. Evernote stores all of my notes, snippets, important pictures, etc. online and sinks with all of my computers. I can access all of my stuff from any place on the planet that has an Internet connection. Evernote has a “Clipper” add-on for several different browsers as well as a plug-in for the i-phone.
Evernote meets all my productivity and organizational needs. I don’t know how I would get along without it.
I believe that it is the Best Software of 2008.

I’m trying it out now based only by your review. I hadn’t heard of it, but it looks pretty cool!
